Like a Brother - Special Chapter

Dear Min Lee,

It’s been a year after my return. I’m very happy to be back with SHINee and the others. You guys can come over and visit once in a while. I don’t mind paying for the air tickets. At least you will be entertained during your time here. I’ve got to rush off. I’ll have something more to share with you next time. Until then, take care.

Regards,

Jin Woo Hyung

Jin Woo
It’s Christmas Eve, and the city is covered in a beautiful layer of snow. But there’s no time to play outside because we’re supposed to get ready for a live telecast in a few hours. I rushed over to SHINee’s place in my coat and scarf with my violin after feeding the Kitties. I let myself in with the spare keys given to me by them. Key was already busy preparing breakfast.
“They’re still asleep?” I asked him as I hung my coat and placed my violin nearby.
“As usual….I have a very evil plan to wake them up. But first, we need to finish cooking dinner.” He told me with a grin. I folded up my sleeves and put on an apron to assist in the cooking.

Few minutes later…

I was soaking my hands in a basin full of cold water. My hands are starting to feel numb as I raise them up with some ice in my grip for good measure and scooted towards Jonghyun while Key stood by the door. Let the fun begin…

Jonghyun
I was having so much fun with Jin Woo and the others on the beach. Jin Woo then turned around as the others ran further away.
“Jonghyun, wake up.” He told me.
“But we’re having so much fun.” I whined.
“Jonghyun, it’s only a dream. Wake up.” He said.
“I don’t want to wake up.” I replied as I moved to hug him.
“Then you leave me no choice…” He said as he laid his hands on me…

Jin Woo
“Arrrrrrrgh…!!!” Jonghyun woke up screaming as I put my hands on his exposed face. His scream was enough to wake the others in the room. Luckily I had my earmuffs on as I would have received the full blast from his scream.
“Hi Jonghyun.” I gave my best grin as I lifted my hands from him.
“Don’t…ever…do that…again…” Jonghyun was gasping for air as he got up.
“Sorry Baby…you’re just too irresistible to be bullied.” I teased him as I started to get up.
“And dinner is ready.” Key added as we headed downstairs laughing.
It took a while for them to get ready as they all came down and sat at the table. Someone was still holding a grudge against me. I got up and went to hug Jonghyun.
“Are you still mad at me for doing that just now Baby?” I asked him teasingly.
“Hmph!” Was his only reply.
“Awww…Don’t get mad. I promise I’ll make it up to you.” I acted cuddly with him and tickled him a bit. That got him to smile.
“You promised.” Jonghyun said while laughing.
“Hurry up, Mingeul hyung is on his way already.” Key informed as we all had our breakfast.

One hour later...

Jonghyun
We’ve arrived at the live telecast location as Mingeul rushed us to the changing room.
“Ok guys, have some rest before we go through our lineup rehearsals.” Mingeul instructed as we settled down. Jin Woo was tuning his violin while we let the make-up people do their work.
“I’m still trying to get used to this.” He said while working on his violin.
“Don’t worry…We felt the same way before. It’ll take some time for you to be familiarise with being famous.” I assured him.
“But I’ve only performed a few times before.” He said with doubt.
“Look, everybody make mistakes during performance. Sometimes even we make mistakes too. But as long as we do our best, we’ll definitely improve over time.” I told Jin Woo as I turned around in my seat.
“Hmm…I’ll give my best performance to the crowd then.” Jin Woo smiled as he replaced his violin and took a seat at the make-up table.

Jin Woo
After getting our make-up, we chose our clothes and changed into them. Other performers were arriving as we greeted and chatted with all of them. Even though we’re all rivals in the music industry but we never let that get in our way as we hang around and talked while sharing ideas and suggestions.
All of us rehearsed our performances before the event starts. Besides, I’ve practiced a lot in the studio as well in order to prepare myself for this. As the moment nears, more and more spectators gathered at the location. All of them are fans carrying neon boards with words of support and encouragement to their favourite performers. Soon, an announcement was made and all the fans cheered which means that the event has already started. The emcees introduced themselves and the performers as we went on stage for the opening performance. Everyone was in a happy mood as we sang and danced.
To make things interesting, there were some variety games as well for the performers to participate to keep the crowd entertained. The fans cheered, laughed and screamed watching their favourite performers playing the games. We also had a joint performance in a sketch of a funny version of Romeo and Juliet with the emcees holding the role as narrators and both Jonghyun and I played the leads which draws laughter from the crowd and the fans screaming during the romantic scenes. One by one the performers like SHINee, Big Bang, SNSD, Super Junior, 2PM, 2AM and others all did their best to entertain the crowd.
“And now, we have a newcomer this year. And he made quite a name for himself in the music industry with his amazing music…” The emcee announced while I prepared for my turn.

Jonghyun
It’s evident that Jin Woo is getting nervous. I placed my hands on his shoulders.
“Don’t worry, just do your best and everything will be alright.” I whispered in his ear while giving a little squeeze to loosen him up.
“Thanks…” It was the only reply he can answer as he turned around to look at all of us. To tell the truth, we’re all nervous about his performance too.
“Presenting…Kim Jin Woo…!!” The emcee announced followed by screams from the fans. I gave Jin Woo a little push and smiled as he went on stage with his violin.

Jin Woo
As I went on stage, I can hear the cheers and screams from the fans. I’m starting to get nervous, but I had to calm myself down as I lifted my violin and prepared for my performance. I gave a signal to the music crew and they started the music as everyone became silent for my rendition of “Silent Night”.

Jonghyun
His performance was captivating as usual. Everyone is awed by it. He looks like an angel sent from above wearing jeans with a white long-sleeved T-shirt that comes with a small pair of wings to boot. But seeing his recovery after his return just makes me smile. During that time, he released his first album which he had recorded with Yu Hee for us previously, went for interviews and events while juggling his studies and hanging out with us altogether. His music was liked by many and soon he started to become famous and have his own loyal fans. He came a long way to become the Jin Woo that we all know and love.

Jin Woo
As I finished my performance, everyone clapped and cheered as I turned and bowed to the music crew as a courtesy. I motioned for the stage assistant and hand over my violin while he passed me a microphone. After a while, everyone in the crowd calmed down as I started to speak.
“First of all, I’d like to thank all of you for your support. I’ve never expected to become the person standing here in front of all of you today without you. You know who you are, so thank you once again from the bottom of my heart.” I addressed the crowd and specifically to SHINee who’re backstage at the moment as I looked around.
“Now, I have a surprise performance for all of you. This would be the first time I’m doing it. I hope everyone here will get to enjoy yourselves tonight. This is my Christmas present to all of you.” I said and smiled as the snow machine started just as I have planned and the music crew began to play. Let the surprise begin…

Jonghyun
We were all smiling as Jin Woo addressed the crowd when the stage assistant passed his violin to us. Jin Woo is one in a million and can never be replaced in our hearts.
“You know, maybe it’s fate that brought him to us. I can’t even imagine what would have happened otherwise.” Key said as we all nodded in agreement.
“Ahhh…we made it just in time.” We turned around to see Yu Hee, Mingeul, Min Lee and Joonhae entering the backstage room.
“Min Lee, when did you arrived?” Minho asked as we all gave Jin Woo’s brother a hug.
“Oh, just now…Luckily I’ve made it in time for his performance. Thanks to Joohae hyung.” He explained while looking at the police detective.
“It’s nothing actually. I just flexed a bit of my authority to make sure you arrived on time.” Joonhae smiled.
“Isn’t that an abuse of authority?” Taemin asked in confusion.
“Now if you know which person to ask and to return a favour.” Joonhae explained and gave a wink.
“I thought you came to see Jin Woo’s performance. But I’m afraid you’re too late. It’s over already.” Onew said as we all looked at them.
“No, I don’t mean this performance. I’m talking about the next one that’s going to happen now.” Min Lee said as we all were confused. Only Joonhae, Yu Hee and Mingeul were smiling.
“There’s something you’re not telling us…” I looked at them suspiciously.
“Just listen and you’ll know.” Yu Hee said as we looked at Jin Woo as his speech continues.
“This would be the first time I’m doing it. I hope everyone here will get to enjoy yourselves tonight. This is my Christmas present to all of you.” It was all that we heard before the music started.
As he sang the first line of “White Christmas”, everyone in the crowd was stunned. Even we were too surprised to speak. I never knew Jin Woo had such a wonderful voice.
“I guess his training finally paid off.” Yu Hee said as she giggled.
“It was tough to keep the secret with everyone in the company.” Mingeul agreed.
“So, the last few weeks when he said he wasn’t free…” I looked at Mingeul and Yu Hee.
“He was diligently practicing his singing skills.” Yu Hee finished the sentence.
“I admit, we were surprised when he first tried.” Mingeul added.
“He has musical talent, he can sing, he plays the violin, good looks and personality. He’ll be taking the music scene by storm.” Yu Hee commented.
“I think he has already done that.” I replied as we all listened to his performance.

Jin Woo
It was already midnight as I’ve finished my performance. Then the band played “Jingle Bell Rock” as everyone went on stage and sang the final song. SHINee came over and gave me a hug. All of us wished the audience a Merry Christmas as we got off the stage. Everyone was congratulating each other and wished Merry Christmas. I was surprised to see Min Lee backstage as he gave me a hug while Joonhae patted on my head.
All of us went back to my place to relax and chat while I made some tea. SHINee went back to their home to get something and came back with presents in their hands.
“Merry Christmas.” Everyone cheered as we clinked our cups together. The next part was to open the presents that everyone gave.
I’ve got a shirt from Joonhae and Min Lee, a pair of shoes from Yu Hee and Mingeul, a recipe book from Key, a photo frame from Taemin, a pair of cufflinks from Onew, an iPad from Minho and a bracelet from Jonghyun
“Awww…Thanks you guys.” I hugged each of them. For the next few hours, everyone opened their presents and we attempted to jailbreak my iPad to download and play Angry Birds. The game was evidently very addictive as myself, Min Lee and SHINee made the most noise playing the game.
It was way past midnight as everyone said farewell and left. Min Lee TOOK HIS LUGGAGE FROM Joonhae’s car and stayed with me during his vacation here.
“Hyung, did you enjoy yourself today?” Min Lee asked when I got out from the shower.
“Of course I did, silly. I enjoyed every day of my life since my return.” I ruffled his head.
“I miss you so much.” Min Lee said as he hugged me.
“I miss you guys too. But that doesn’t mean we can’t see each other.” I told him.
“That’s true.” He gave a big grin as I shooed him off for his turn to shower.
“If I didn’t met Jonghyun and SHINee in the first place, I wonder how my life would turn out to be?” I thought to myself as I stared at the wall.

Jonghyun
“Achoo…” I sneezed after getting out from the shower.
I guess it was a good thing that we got to meet with Jin Woo. He’s been a wonderful friend to all of us and we wouldn’t want anything to change. I just hope that we can spend more happy times together.

Like A Brother - Final Chapter

Dear Min Lee,

How are you guys lately? The final semester went on as usual until the exams. Luckily everyone got through. Now we’re on our semester break. It’s going to be Christmas tomorrow. Unfortunately, this will be the last e-mail I will ever send to you. It’s something that I need to settle once and for all with Lee Shin Kyung. After that, he will never bother you guys again. This is the only Christmas present I have to give you. Don’t ever try to look for me. I just wanted all of you to live happily from now on. I’m sorry that I have to leave all of you. Take care and I love you guys.

P.S. Attached are the pictures taken during my birthday a few months back. Something to remember me by.

Regards,

Jin Woo Hyung

Jin Woo
I’ve already submitted my withdrawal letter from school, I gave my resignation letter to Mingeul and Yu Hee, my presents for SHINee and the notes are done, now I can leave. But, the kittens seemed to have sensed my departure. They were meowing loudly, I had to coax them with cat food and drinks to make them quiet.
As I closed the front gate, with my luggage in hand, I walked away into the late night, where a waiting car was parked nearby. Pain and sorrow have a tight grip on my heart as warm tears flowed down my face. All the memories we had together, I’ll cherish it for life. But I had to do this, at least for them…

In the morning…

Jonghyun
We were having breakfast when Key and Taemin came back from visiting Jin Woo. They have a panicked look on their face. Something doesn’t feel right.
“Jin Woo hyung, he’s not at home.” Key said.
“He left a note for all of us. And a present as well.” Taemin added. We all went over to his house.
His closet was empty and his luggage bag is nowhere to be seen. He can’t just left us. Not without a goodbye.
Everyone was reading their notes downstairs. Only one was left on the table. The one with my name written on the front. I picked up the envelope and it felt heavy. As I took out the note, I saw the necklace which I bought for his birthday a few months back inside the envelope. His note was written as follows:

Dear Jonghyun,

I know you really wanted to help me. But this is something that I have to settle on my own. I can’t get any of you involved in this. Especially with what Lee Shin Kyung can do. You can hate me all you want, but this is the only way I can save everyone from harm. From the person who was my father by some sick twist of fate. Remember what you promised me. The two tasks, now for the remaining four:

3) Think of me always
4) Live every minute of your life happily
5) Take care of the house and the SHINee Kitties
6) Keep this necklace, until the day when I return

I’m sorry to leave all of you so suddenly. I promise to explain everything once I return. For now, just know that you will all be in my heart forever. All the best in your career.

Regards,

Jin Woo

Tears started to flow down my face. How could he? He was the usual Jin Woo just last night and now he left us so suddenly.
“No…he can’t do this…” I muttered to myself.
“Jonghyun…” Minho tried to calm me down.
“Jin Woo hyung can’t do this!!” I cried as I got up to leave.
“Jonghyun, what are you trying to do?” Taemin tried to hold me back.
“I’m going to look for him! No matter what it takes!” I shouted. I won’t accept this reality.
“Jonghyun, you can’t do this.” Onew tried to reason with me as I tried to struggle from Minho and Taemin’s hold.
“He…He can’t just leave us like this. Not before saying a proper goodbye…Not like this…” I wanted to leave here so bad. Just then, somebody slapped my face. I was stunned to see that Key was crying too.
“Don’t be selfish!” He scolded. “Do you think you’re the only one who’s hurt right now? Just because both of you were close to each other?” He waved his arm in general. I looked at everyone’s face and I can see they’re trying to hold back their tears as well.
“He did all this for us. If he knew we’ve gone and searched for him. Do you think he will show himself? And jeopardise all his efforts?” Key continued.
“His family must be going through the same thing as us right now.” Taemin said in general.
“Jin Woo hyung means a lot to us too.” Onew said as I knelt onto the floor.
“He can’t be replaced…ever.” Minho said. At that moment, I cried my heart out. For my failure to help Jin Woo when he’s troubled. I feel so helpless. The others hugged me as they all cried as well. Jin Woo has a special existence in our hearts. With him gone, this will be one of the saddest moments in our lives…

Few weeks later…

Jonghyun
We were taking care of Jin Woo’s house and the SHINee Kitties as always. As we were leaving, a young kid was standing in front of the house.
“You must be Jonghyun hyung.” He said to me.
I was confused for a moment. How can a 16 year old kid recognise me immediately? Only then a thought came to me. “You’re Min Lee…” I said to the boy. Who gave an acknowledging smile.
“Thanks for taking care of my brother.” He bowed to us.
“No, we should thank you. Jin Woo hyung took good care of us when he was here.” We bowed back to him in respect.
“But why are you here?” Key asked.
“I brought him here.” A figure appeared. I remember him, the man from the broadcasting station, Lee Shin Kyung’s personal assistant.
“Where’s Jin Woo hyung!?” I demanded as I gripped him by the collar.
“No, Jonghyun hyung. Don’t hurt Joonhae hyung!” Min Lee pleaded.
“You knew him?” I asked in surprise.
“Yes, he’s trying to protect my brother.” Min Lee said.
“If he’s protecting Jin Woo hyung, why is he working for Lee Shin Kyung?” I asked.
“Because…” Joonhae said as he showed his badge. “I’m working undercover.” He explained.
“Where is Jin Woo hyung then?” Minho asked.
“I can’t tell neither you nor Min Lee anything for the sake of your lives. Just know that he is safe now.” Joonhae replied.
“Wait here…” Key said as he went into our house. A few minutes later, he came back with a CD in hand.
“That’s…” Onew realised what it was.
“Jin Woo hyung’s recordings.” Key answered. I’ve listened to it countless of times.
“The one he was working secretly with Yu Hee noona and Mingeul hyung.” Taemin said. As though Jin Woo expected something will happen at that time.
“This is for you.” Key said as he gave the CD to Min Lee.
“But what about you guys?” He asked.
“Don’t worry, we can always ask from Yu Hee noona for another copy.” Taemin told him.
“Consider it an unofficial album from Jin Woo hyung.” I said to Min Lee as I ruffled his hair.
“Thank you.” Min Lee said as he bowed again.
“We have to go…” Joonhae said as he and Min Lee started to leave. “Call me if there’s anything you want for Min Lee.” He said as he gave his number to us.
We stood and watched Min Lee and Joonhae leaving. Not sure when we will meet again…

Few months later…

Jonghyun
We busied ourselves with our work schedule between performances, tv shows, school and recordings. We attended one of the variety show recordings that just finished when there was a call on my phone.
“Jonghyun, is it ok for you to talk?” Joonhae asked.
“Sure, what is it about?” I asked.
“I don’t know how to say this…but I need you to remain calm…” Joonhae said.
“Why? What happened?” I asked him. There was panic in my voice as I got worried.
“Lee Shin Kyung tried to murder Jin Woo. He suffered major blood loss and is now in a coma.” Joonhae explained. At that moment, my phone slipped and clattered onto the floor.
“Jonghyun…” Onew called for me.
“Jonghyun...Are you alright?” Minho asked as he saw my phone on the floor.
“What happened?” Key asked.
“Jonghyun…what did Joonhae said?” Taemin asked after he saw the last caller list.
I turned to look at them. There were tears flowing down my face. “It’s…It’s Jin Woo hyung…He’s in a coma.” I told them. Everyone was shocked by the news. Taemin immediately called Joonhae for the location…

At the hospital…

Jonghyun
All of us were in Jin Woo’s ward with Mingeul and Yu Hee. There were so many tubes connected to him. He looked so weak and fragile. My heart ached when I saw him like this. He’s been so nice to everyone and this happened to him. Life is so unfair.
“How did this happened?” Minho asked.
“Lee Shin Kyung wanted money to save his company from bankruptcy. His father-in-law left him a will with a huge sum when he passed away recently. With one condition, that he must produce an heir to inherit the business. Something that he was not able to for the past few years before his wife passed away earlier. Jin Woo was his only choice left. But in the lawyer’s office, when the DNA results came out yesterday, it showed that they were not related biologically. His real father, ironically, was his stepfather. Jin Woo was equally surprised by this. But rage soon consumed Shin Kyung, he took a letter opener and stabbed Jin Woo. Luckily no vital organs were compromised.” Joonhae explained.
“Where is Shin Kyung?” I asked as I continued to look at Jin Woo.
“He’s now in custody. And he won’t be seeing the outside world forever.” Joonhae replied.
Key came over to me. “We need to go. Jin Woo hyung needs to rest.” He said to me.
“No, you guys go back first. I’ll stay here with him.” I told Key.
“But Jonghyun…” Key was stopped by Mingeul.
“Mingeul hyung…” Key looked at him.
“Let’s leave Jonghyun here for tonight.” Mingeul said.
“But…” Key wanted to object.
“Key, you know how close Jonghyun was with Jin Woo.” Onew said.
“It’s best to let them be alone for a while.” Yu Hee said as she directed the others to go outside.
“Take care, Jonghyun.” Taemin said before they leave.
“Min Lee and his parents will be here tomorrow. Just to let you know.” Joonhae said as he followed the others.
Once the door closed, I took a seat beside Jin Woo. I held his hand in mine. It felt so cold. The only sign that he’s alive is the beeping sound of the machines.
“Jin Woo hyung…I promised myself to protect you. To be there whenever you need me. But now you end up like this. I don’t know what to do…” I cried as I placed my head on his bed. Praying very hard that he’ll never leave. Min Lee and his parents came the next day. From the expression on his face, I assumed his father knew about this a long time ago. The doctor advised that it is best for Jin Woo to be near his family. So that there’s someone to care for him. I wanted to be there as well, but I can’t just leave everyone behind for my selfishness. His family agreed to bring him back to take care of him. Min Lee promised to let me know if there’s anything. I will pray hard every day for Jin Woo’s recovery. It’s the least I can do for him…

One year later…

Jonghyun
“Let’s give a big round of applause again for SHINee…!!” The emcee announced excitedly after our concert performance as it came to an end. All the fans were screaming and cheering for us. I tried my best to put on a smile but my heart feels empty. Mingeul, Yu Hee, Min Lee and his parents were sitting at the front row. We requested to reserve those seats for them. But only one seat was empty. If only Jin Woo was here as well to see us.
“Thank you for giving us such an enjoyable night…!!” The emcee said.
“Thanks to all the fans who are here to see us. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.” Onew said as we bowed to the audience.
“Wait a minute.” Just then, the emcee held out his hand. Everyone fell silent.
“It seems that there is a request from a fan.” He listened to his earphone as the instructions were being relayed to him.
“The request is that SHINee will need to stand at the front of the stage…blindfolded while the person is performing. It’s supposed to be a gift for SHINee.” The emcee announced. Everyone in the audience was whispering. All of us were wondering what was going on. We looked at Mingeul for an explanation but he shrugged. Even Yu Hee didn’t have any idea at all. We looked at each other with doubt.
“Okay then, we’ll fulfil the request.” Onew said.
The stage assistants blindfolded all of us and led us to the front of the stage. Still wondering what all this is about. The emcee tested each of us to see if the blindfold works.
“Alright, you may now begin your performance.” The emcee said.
There were more whisperings from the audience as the lights were switched on. As soon as it started, everyone was silent after that. The band started to play a slow tune, and then there was the sound of a violin. At first, none of us can make out the music. But after a while, I realised what it was. One of the music that I’ve heard a lot of times, the music from Jin Woo’s CD.
I quickly removed the blindfold and looked at Min Lee and the others. They were smiling happily while Min Lee gave me a wink. I quickly turned around as Minho patted on my shoulder. One of the lights was shining onto the performer. He was wearing a white shirt with jeans. He was smiling while playing his violin. I cried once I saw who it was…Jin Woo…
As he played his violin, He looked like an angel with white wings spreading behind him with imaginary white feathers falling and fluttering all around him. He looked so beautiful.
Once finished, he held his arms wide as he looked and smiled at us. I was the first to run and hugged him. Then he whispered something in my ear. The audience screamed and cheered loudly at the same time.
“I’m home…Jonghyun…” He said. With that, I felt my heart was whole again. That one phrase I wanted to hear for so long.
“Welcome back…Jin Woo hyung…” I smiled and whispered back. The others joined in as well. Everyone was happy to see Jin Woo again as I wiped the tears from my face.
“Now, Jonghyun…I heard you’ve been a bad boy recently.” Jin Woo said to me as we looked at each other.
“That was a lie…!! I’ve been real good…Honest…!!” I told him.
“What happened to taking care of my house and the Kitties?” He looked at me sternly.
“Well, I sort of…delegated the duty to Key…” I smiled sheepishly.
“Right…” He said. Then he smiled. “I believe you have something for me.” He said to me. I immediately searched in my pants pocket and pulled out the necklace. He took it and tied it around his neck.
We turned to look at the fans who were still cheering. “Everyone…meet our one and only, Our special Jin Woo hyung!!” I told the audience as we all bowed again. The audience went wild.
“I miss you, Baby…” I told him playfully.
“Me too, Darling…” He told me as he gave another hug.
“And Omma and Oppa are back together again…” Minho said as we all laughed.

Epilogue
I held the light in my hands,
As it shined bright and warm,
It let me see my world,
In colours and warmth I’ve never felt before.
So I made a promise to myself,
To protect this light always and never let it vanish.

Like a Brother - Chapter 12

Dear Min Lee,

I’ve appeared on a tv show. How cool was that? I’ve attached pictures of the broadcasting station and the studio. The host interviewed me and SHINee. I wonder if there’s a video posted by the fans on the internet or not. Try to look around and you might be able to find it. Show Mom and Dad as well the video. I love you guys.

P.S. Thanks for the birthday wish in advance…

Regards,

Jin Woo Hyung

Jin Woo
“Saengil chukka hamnida…” I sang to myself while preparing breakfast. It’s my birthday today. And I have the whole day to myself. I’ve planned to go over to the shopping mall for a bit and spend the rest of the day at home with the SHINee Kitties.
Just as I was enjoying myself, the phone rang. I went to pick it up.
“Good morning, Master Jin Woo…” The voice on the other line said. Immediately my mood has changed.
“I told you I don’t want to be called that way, Joonhae hyung.” I told Joonhae on the phone. How did they manage to get my number?
“The President would like to meet you.” Joonhae informed.
“There’s no need for me to see him.” I replied coolly. Why would that man wanted to see me for. I wondered.
“He said he has something that might be interesting for you.” Joonhae replied.  It took me a few minutes to consider.
“Alright, where does he want to meet me?” I told Joonhae.
“He said to meet at Shin Kyung Mall. I’ll be at the main entrance personally to show you the way.” Joonhae replied.
“I’ll be there in about half an hour’s time.” I told Joonhae.
“As you wish…Jin Woo.” Joonhae replied before I hang up the phone.
Might as well I listen to what that man has to say. I had my breakfast and fed the kittens before going to my room to clean and change…

A few minutes later…

Jonghyun
Key was standing by the window watching for any movement from Jin Woo. We all knew what the occasion today is. Key got the nickname Almighty for a good reason.
“Key, don’t stand there and stalk Jin Woo hyung.” Onew said.
“If he sees you then the whole plan will be ruined.” Minho added.
“Fine…” Key obliged but was suddenly excited again.
“He’s out…he’s out of the house…” Key told everyone. We all went to the window and looked.
“Alright…” Key said as he turned around.
“Jonghyun…You’ll collect the cake that I’ve ordered and the presents. Onew and Taemin will be in charge of the groceries while Minho and I will do the decorating in Jin Woo hyung’s house.” Key relayed the instructions as he took out one of the spare keys Jin Woo gave to each of us.
“How much time do we have?” I asked.
“That is the one thing that I’m not sure of.” Key replied.
“Let’s just hope that Jin Woo hyung will be out for some time.” Taemin said as we all began our mission…

Half an hour later…

Jin Woo
I’ve arrived at Shin Kyung Mall as promised. Joonhae was standing by the front entrance, looking smart in suit and tie. Some of the girls and ladies who passed by had a second look and giggled a bit.
“Mas-, I mean, Jin Woo. The President is expecting you.” Joonhae said as he lead the way.
We went into one of the lift and Joonhae swiped his personnel tag before pressing on the highest floor.
“Access to higher floors are limited due to security purposes.” Joonhae explained as the lift started to ascend.
Joonhae may be working for that man, but there’s no reason for me to hate him.
“I see you are doing very well, Joonhae hyung.” I said to him.
“All thanks to the President.” He replied.
A few minutes later, the lift opened into a huge office space. We walked up to the double doors and Joonhae knocked on it.
“Come in…” A voice replied from the other side, his voice.
Both of us entered into the room. Lee Shin Kyung was sitting behind his desk. The back of his chair was facing us.
“Mr. President, I’ve brought Master Jin Woo.” Joonhae informed as he bowed.
“Thank you, Joonhae. If you could leave us in private please.” Shin Kyung said as he turned around.
“As you wish.” Joonhae replied as he left the room. Closing the doors behind him.
“What is it that you wanted to tell me?” I asked Shin Kyung. Expecting that nothing good will come from this man.
“Please have a seat first.” He invited.
“No thanks, I’ll just stand here to hear what you have to say and then I’ll leave.” I told him coolly.
“Oh, I just only have a request for you.” Shin Kyung said as he smiled at me. A request he said? Now that’s something rare.
“What if I refuse?” I challenged him.
“Well, you never know when accidents will happen.” He replied.
“I knew you had something to do with Yoona’s death!” I shouted at him.
“Her death was an accident. I did not have any involvement in that.” He replied coolly.
“So says the devil who claims to be innocent.” I said to him sarcastically.
“Be careful with your tone, boy. Or he’ll go first…” Shin Kyung warned as he pointed with a remote onto the big screen nearby. An image appeared and my heart stopped for a moment. Why is he in the mall?

Jonghyun
I took out the piece of paper that Key had written down and searched for the shop. It was not very helpful as only the name was written. It took me quite an effort to search for it. Collecting the presents earlier was already difficult enough. I entered the shop once I found it.
“Good day, sir. How may I help you?” The shop assistant asked.
“Err, my friend had ordered a cake earlier. I’m here to collect it.” I replied her.
“Alright, can I have the name please?” The assistant asked.
“It’s either Key or Kim Kibum.” I answered.
“Please hold on a minute.” The assistant replied as she looked through her system.
“Ah, yes. I believe the cake is ready.” She said after a few minutes. “Would you like to have a look first?” She asked.
“Yes, please.” I told her as she took the cake and showed me. Key’s selection was perfect. I went to pay at the cashier and was surprised by the price. Key’s taste is quite pricey too. Jin Woo better love the cake…

Jin Woo
I turned to look at Shin Kyung. “Don’t you dare do anything to him or the others.” I warned him.
“I don’t see the point why you’re so protective of them.” Shin Kyung said as he rested his elbows on the table with his fingers crossed.
“They’re like brothers to me. And if anything happens to them, I swear I’ll make you regret the day you crossed my path.” I told him with full hatred.
“Relax, I’ll guarantee that nothing will happen to them. If you accept my request, after that we’re done once and for all.” He told me.
“What is it?” I asked him.
“You see, my late father-in-law passed away and left a will. He left a huge sum for me. An amount that I need in order to save this company from bankruptcy. But, there’s a condition to fulfil. Which is to have an heir to inherit the business.” He explained.
“And that’s where I come in…” I said as I remembered the words he said back at the broadcasting station.
“Correct…But, to make sure that you are my son, they need a DNA test to be done which the results might take a few months where you will be staying with me.” He said.
“I’ll think about it.” I told him as I stood and went to the doors.
“Sure, but don’t take too long. This is an offer that you won’t turn down.” Shin Kyung smiled as I closed the doors behind me. Joonhae was waiting by the opened lift. He entered with me into the lift.
As we were in the middle of our journey to descend, Joonhae suddenly pressed on the stop button and the lift halted in between floors. That took me by surprise.
“Jin Woo, I don’t have much time to explain.” He looked at me.
“What do you mean? Joonhae hyung?” I asked him in confusion.
“I knew Yoona’s death was not an accident.” He told me as he showed a police badge. Above it was a picture of Yoona smiling.
“How did you know?” I asked him.
“I joined the police and found the autopsy of my parents. They were drugged before the accident happened. I’m working undercover to get close to Shin Kyung and expose him. It’s the only way I can get my revenge.” He said before he kept the badge and pressed the button for the lift to resume its journey.
We were silent for a while. “I missed her so much.” I told him.
“I know…she used to tell me a lot about you and your musical skills. After her death, you didn’t play the violin anymore.” He smiled sadly.
“That was in the past.” I told him.
“Indeed, I saw your performance on tv. It was amazing. I guess SHINee means a lot to you.” He said.
“They do, they’re like my brothers. And I don’t want to lose them.” I told him.
Joonhae only accompanied me to the entrance. He gave me a card with Shin Kyung’s contact number as I made my journey back with a lot to think about in my mind…

Jonghyun
Luckily I returned early. Onew and Taemin done their grocery shopping and were helping out with the decoration while Key was busy cooking dinner. So far so good…
I hope Jin Woo will enjoy it…

Half an hour later…

Jin Woo
I glanced at SHINee’s house when I reached home. It was dark…Maybe they went out today as well and haven’t returned. I opened the front door and entered. As I switched on the light, I was slightly confused as to what happened to my house.
“Saengil chukka hamnida…!!!” There was a loud cheer as SHINee appeared from their hiding spots. Jonghyun had even brought Roo along. They’ve caught me by surprise.
“Aww…guys…thank you.” I hugged them one by one.
“Before we do anything, let’s have dinner first.” Key said as we went to the dining table.
“Key, we still have a cake in the fridge.” Minho said.
“Are you trying to stuff us?” Jonghyun asked.
“All the better for me to eat all of you….” Key replied as he gave his best witchy laugh. We all had an enjoyable dinner before moving on to the main event.
I was sitting by the living room table as they brought out the cake. It was a chocolate cake with roses decorated all over.
“Happy 20th birthday Jin Woo hyung.” They all wished me as I made my wish and blew the candle.
“When you first introduced yourself, I thought you were 19 this year.” Onew said.
“That is, until I found your details in the student records.” Key added.
“Jin Woo hyung, hurry and open up your presents.” Taemin said excitedly.
“Alright then…” I turned around and saw six presents nearby. “There’s only five of you…why are there 6 presents?” I asked curiously.
“That’s from Mingeul hyung and Yu Hee noona.” Minho replied.
One by one I opened each of the presents. Mingeul and Yu Hee’s is a bottle of cologne. Key’s is a keychain. Minho’s is a belt. Taemin’s is a wallet. Onew’s is a watch. Jonghyun’s is a simple necklace with a Scorpio pendant and a locket. Inside the locket was one of the pictures that we took together during our trip to the theme park.
“Thanks guys.” I smiled as I looked at them.
“Hmm…something doesn’t feel complete…” Onew said. Everyone looked at him….Then looked back at the cake and presents.
“You’re right…” Taemin said.
“There’re the roses on the cake…” Key said.
“Mingeul hyung and Yu Hee noona gave the cologne as present…” Minho said.
“The kiss…” Jonghyun concluded. The others looked at him.
“What?” He asked. Only then he realised. “Me!?”
“Well…We all know you’re the closest to Jin Woo hyung…” Key said.
“So, you should give the kiss.” Minho ended.
I blushed immediately. “You…you mean a real one?” I stuttered.
“That…” Taemin started.
“Depends on both of you…” Onew ended.
“Appa…Give omma a kiss…!!” Minho shouted.
Even Jonghyun blushed. But he did it as well…

Jonghyun
Well, I guess there’s no backing out now. I went and held Jin Woo by the chin.
“Baby, happy 20th birthday…” I said to Jin Woo in my most seductive voice.
“Oh, honey…” He pretended to be shy.
“Your princely kiss…” I said to him as I kissed on his forehead.
“Now hold that pose for 5 seconds.” Key instructed and we followed. There was a camera flash which caught us by surprise as everyone laughed…

Later that night…

Jin Woo
All of us had fun during the party. We packed and cleaned everything before retiring for the night. I looked through the presents again. I looked at the picture in the locket and the image from Shin Kyung’s office in the afternoon came back to me. If I don’t accept his offer, Jonghyun will be the first. If I agree to his offer, the others will be safe and I can help Joonhae as well. I closed my hand around the locket. If that’s the only way left for me…I picked up my phone and dialled the number.
“Hello, I’ve been waiting for you to call…” His voice came over the phone.
“Shin Kyung, I’ll accept your offer. Give me until Christmas after the final semester has ended.” I told him.
“Very well, you have my word.” He said as I hung up. It’s the only thing I can do to help them…
I looked at the picture again as tears started to flow down my face. Remembering all our happy moments and the pain of leaving them behind forever…

Like a Brother - Chapter 11

Dear Min Lee,

It’s been a week after the new semester had started. School went on as usual and I had to juggle between my work and classes. During the course of my work, I get to meet other pop stars from the company and also composed some songs for them. Everyone said that my work was great, even Yu Hee as well. I’ll keep working harder. Attached are the remaining pictures from our summer vacation in the company villa. Also, my new fall and winter uniform. What do you think? Take care and I love you guys.

Regards,

Jin Woo Hyung

Jin Woo
It was already after school. I was waiting at the school gate with SHINee because today they will be attending a tv show broadcast. The only thing that I don’t understand is why Mingeul asked me to bring my violin along. We were all waiting for him to pick us up.
“Apparently the show starts in 3 hours. So, we’ll have enough time to get ready and rest before the show begins.” Onew said.
“Where is Mingeul hyung anyway?” Jonghyun asked while checking his watch. Just then, Mingeul arrived in his Estima.
“Sorry for the wait guys.” Mingeul apologised as we got onto our seats.
“Mingeul hyung, why did you asked me to bring my violin along?” That was the first question I asked.
“Ah, about that…” Mingeul tried to explain while concentrating on the road.
“Apparently, the broadcasting station had heard of your talents and they allocated a session for you to perform as well. On the same show that SHINee’s in.” He said.

Jonghyun
“But we weren’t informed about this.” I said to Mingeul.
“That’s true. The request came at the last minute.” Mingeul replied.
“That means…” Taemin started.
“That Jin Woo hyung will get national recognition on the show itself.” Key said with a smile as he looked at Jin Woo.
“That’s great.” Minho said as he patted on Jin Woo’s shoulder.

Jin Woo
I immediately got nervous after hearing the news. “I…I don’t think I can do it.” There’s a slight feeling of doubt in my voice.
“Jin Woo hyung, you can do it. Just like the School Festival.” Jonghyun smiled as he encouraged me. I did perform a solo on that day.
“Just do your best, Jin Woo hyung.” Onew said to me.
“You have our support.” Taemin was excited about this.
“Thanks guys.” I told them. “I promise to do my best.” I’ll have to look through my music book later…

One hour later…

Jin Woo
Since there’s ample of time before the show begins, SHINee brought me to look around the broadcasting station. We visited other famous artistes and saw the decorations of the studios for different programs. We were only allowed to visit those which are not occupied at the moment. There were fans sitting at the audience seat and each studio was huge. With lots of equipments and workers busy preparing for the shows.
After the tour, everyone was getting ready for the show in the waiting room, feeling a bit thirsty, I went to get a drink from the vending machine outside. I shouldn’t have thought about that in the first place. Once I got the drink, I saw someone approaching from the opposite direction. He was the one person that I never wanted to see in my life ever again, Lee Shin Kyung.
“Master Jin Woo…” His personal assistant bowed to me. He’s a man in his early 20’s. Sporting a smart look with a personal organiser in his hands. He’s definitely someone new. I have never met him before.
“Don’t ever address me that way.” I warned him.
“Why, Jin Woo? After all, you are my son.” Lee Shin Kyung said.
“Don’t ever call me by that word!! I am not your son!! My real father died when I was 5!!” I yelled back at him.
“Why do you say that? Your dear father is standing right in front of you.” He said in an easy tone.
“You are not my father, you never were, and never will be.” I told him.
“I remember you said that you didn’t want to be rich and famous. Yet you have embarked into the entertainment industry. Such a foolish idea.” Lee Shin Kyung said nonchalantly.
“At least I get to do what I love the most.” I answered him.
“The entertainment industry does not last long. You should have chosen to be in the business industry. At least it is more stable and the returns are quite lucrative.” He said.
“Your ambition is full of greed and ruthlessness. Something that I never wanted to be near to. I know the things that you would do to get there…” I told him. “Such as leaving your wife to die in suffering and pain.” I added with a tone of hatred in my voice.
He grabbed me by the collar and pulled me close. That last comment seemed to have hit the right spot. I looked back at him with unlimited hatred in my heart. So much that I wanted him to die and leave my life alone.
“Now look here, boy.” He told me in a warning voice. “Your mother was foolish to fall in love and had a baby with me. You’re lucky that I didn’t plan to kill you yet because you’re the only ticket that I have right now.” I didn’t understood what he was talking about at that time…

In the studio…

Jonghyun
I wonder where did Jin Woo went. He’s not in the waiting room, so where else could he be? I went to look around when I heard Jin Woo’s voice. I followed the direction where his voice was coming from and I saw him with Lee Shin Kyung who was holding him by his collar and was close to his face. Jin Woo’s eyes only have the feeling of loathe towards that man. What actually did happened to Jin Woo’s past.
Clearing my voice, I went in their direction. “Jin Woo hyung, is something wrong?” I asked.
“No, Jonghyun, This man was actually about to leave.” He replied. There was a challenging look on his face as he said that.
“Oh, don’t take it too seriously…” Lee Shin Kyung said with a smile. “I was just practicing a bit of acting with him.” He tidied up Jin Woo’s shirt as he let him go.
“Thanks for the tips…It was an impressive lesson.” Lee Shin Kyung said as he went towards the exit and stopped.
“Oh, let me introduce my new assistant, he’s Yoona’s elder brother…Joonhae. He’s working for me to repay his gratitude for my help after that tragic accident. Apparently his sister was quite close with you before it happened.” Lee Shin Kyung introduced as his personal assistant bowed.
“We’ll meet again another time. Enjoy your trip here.” Lee Shin Kyung said as they left the station.
I looked back at Jin Woo and was worried. There was a shocked look on his face after hearing the name…

Jin Woo
Choi Yoona, it’s been a long time since I heard her name. She was my best friend when we were young, and also a person that I had secretly loved. But a tragedy happened when I was 9. She died in a traffic accident with her parents. Her brother was overseas that time. The newspaper reported that her father had lost control of the car and fell off a cliff. It was raining that day.
“Jin Woo hyung…Are you alright?” Jonghyun’s voice brought me back to reality.
“Oh…nothing…” I tried to put on a smile.
“You don’t look so good just now…” He said with a look of concern on his face.
“Don’t worry…I’ll be fine after some rest.” I assured him.

Jonghyun
I’m still not convinced even if he put on his best smile. I know he’s still feeling uncomfortable after the meeting.
“Remember the UNO game we played?” He asked.
“Yes…” I replied him.
“Your second task…is to not tell anyone what you saw just now.” He said that to me.
“But this is serious….” I wanted to object.
“Please, Jonghyun…Don’t get involved in this.” He pleaded. “This is a problem that only I can solve myself. I don’t want anyone else to get involved in this…” He told me with his head down. “Especially you guys…” There was a soft sob and I saw tears rolling down his face.
This was the first time I have ever seen him like this. It makes my heart ache and I feel like I wanted to protect him even more. I feel so helpless right now.
“Alright, I promise…” It was all that I can say as I hugged him.
“Thanks…” Jin Woo whispered to me.

Jin Woo
I can’t let anyone to get involved in this. Not even Jonghyun. My family and SHINee, they’re all too important to me.
“Hey, there you are…” I heard Onew’s voice and quickly wiped my tears as Jonghyun let go of me.
“We’ve been searching for the both of you.” Key said with his arms folded across the chest.
“The band leader wanted to know which song you will be performing later.” Minho said.
“He wants his band to practice in advance before the show begins.” Taemin concluded.
“Tell him I’ll be there in a minute…” I told the others. They went to relay the message as I pulled Jonghyun into the waiting room while I searched for my music book…

A few hours later...

Jin Woo
I have already practiced with the music group with the song that I chose. Everyone in the audience was discussing about me when I entered the studio with Jonghyun earlier. I’ve also met the host of the show and we chatted a bit. Key actually chose matching casual wears for all of us. I’m wearing a black t-shirt with jeans and sneakers. Something that I’m comfortable with. We’re not supposed to wear school uniforms in case the fans might stalk us. But based on our popularity in the school, I doubt it helps much.
Once the studio master gave the signal, the intro music was played and the audience cheered loudly. The host introduced SHINee individually and she interviewed them about their work, any upcoming album in the near future, what are the goals that they hope to achieve, and other things in general. This was the first time I see them live in a tv show. And they put in all their efforst to make it their best as I looked from afar on my side of the studio.
The host looked at them as she issued the next question. “I believe you have brought a special guest today?” She asked.
“Well, we were informed a bit at the last minute. But yes, he’s a really special person for all of us.” Jonghyun replied on behalf of them.
“Well then, before we get to meet that person, we have arranged for him to perform as well after hearing about his talent. But that will have to wait after the commercial break.” The host announced as everyone took the chance to relax.
Jonghyun came over to me. “Jin Woo hyung, I don’t know what happened earlier. But just do your best later. Okay?” He asked me.
“I will…” I promised him…

Five minutes later…

Jonghyun
The show resumed after the break as the host introduced Jin Woo. “Welcome back, just now we were talking about SHINee’s special guest who is very talented in music.” The host informed from where we left before the commercial break.
“Without further delay, let’s all watch his first performance on tv…” The host announced as all the cameras focused on Jin Woo. The band leader gave the signal as they started the music. Then, Jin Woo began his performance. Everyone present was awed by his music. At first the song started with a slow tune, and then it began to pick up the pace. The audience clapped along with the music. Even we were influenced as well.
As we continued to listen and watch his performance, I noticed the song is not the type like we performed during the school festival. This song sounds more like a song about conflicts. Only when I looked at Jin Woo’s eyes that I realised his expression while he was playing the violin. He chose this song for his performance so that he can express whatever he was feeling just now after meeting with Lee Shin Kyung. A song of hatred and in some parts, of sorrow after hearing a name that only he is familiar with.
As I watched him perform, it looks like as though a pair of black wings have grown behind him and extended widely. With his facial expression of hatred, he looked like an angel of vengeance. With imaginary black feathers falling and fluttering around him as he ended his performance. Somehow, I have a feeling of uneasiness…

Jin Woo
As my performance ended, the audience cheered and clapped loudly. I bowed and smiled as I joined SHINee in their seat. Sitting beside Jonghyun.
“So, introduce a bit about yourself to us.” The host said to me. She told me earlier that these questions are asked normally and that I only need to answer them as usual and make contact with the cameras only when necessary.
“My name’s Kim Jin Woo, and I’m 19 years old.” I replied the host.
“Ah…So that makes you SHINee’s hyung.” She commented.
“Indeed, he’s irreplaceable because he’s our one and only Jin Woo hyung.” Key replied. The crowd screamed excitedly over the reply.
“So he is a really special person.” The host commented.
“How did you meet SHINee?” She then asked me.
“Well, I transferred to their school from overseas a few months back. Since I’m new at that time, I didn’t realise they were a famous group until much later.” I answered sheepishly.
“We’re in the same class and staying just next to each other.” Onew added.
“That is such a coincidence, being classmates and neighbours at the same time.” The host commented.
“So, I heard you just joined the entertainment industry. How did that happened?” She asked.
“Well, they had a look at my music book and introduced me to their manager and the main composer, after looking at my works and my performance, I was accepted to work in the company as a composer trainee.” I replied.
“So you were Yu Hee’s pupil for a while. You’re really lucky.” She said.
“Yeah, I guess so.” I replied the host.
“So Jin Woo, who do you think you’re the closest to among the SHINee members?” The host asked. That question seemed to have caught me by surprise.
“Based on our experience…” Minho started.
“The person closest to Jin Woo among us…” Taemin continued.
“Would be…” Jonghyun wanted to continue and became speechless as the others were looking at him.
“Jonghyun…” I finished the sentence and purposely acted cuddly in front of the camera. It made the audience and the others laughed.
“Darling, don’t say that on the show. It makes me feel shy.” Jonghyun played along.
“I can’t help it…I’m just telling the truth.” I replied as I looked at Jonghyun with my best puppy eyes look.
The girls were screaming even more excitedly as both Jonghyun and I can’t stop laughing. We continued with the interview until the end. The host said that she had a great time with us. We all went back as Mingeul was waiting by the main entrance of the broadcasting station.
“So, how did you feel appearing on tv for the first time?” Mingeul asked.
“I was nervous at first, but after today, I feel ok.” I answered him.
“That’s good.” Mingeul said as the others congratulated me.
But in my heart, there’s a feeling of uneasiness. Something that Lee Shin Kyung said to me. That he still needs me for something. I wonder what it is…
